History.
The Royal Mile, also known as the High Street, was the royal thoroughfare between the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle. The property occupies a building which was erected in 1873 and stands opposite the site of the Nether Bow Port, a large gatehouse between the High Street and the Canongate, which was demolished in 1764. The High Street and the Canongate follow a natural geographical route running downhill from Castle Rock towards the Abbey and Palace of Holyroodhouse. 'Canon's Gait' or Canongate is so called due to the Augustinian canons who were the main passengers along the route. The Burgh of Canongate remained a separate entity until 1856 when its status as a burgh was relinquished and the area was absorbed into the city of Edinburgh.
