About the location (Balerno, Edinburgh, Scotland)

Balerno, (Scottish Gaelic: Baile Airneach), meaning townland /town of the hawthorns, is a suburb of Edinburgh. The earliest written records are found in the late 13th century.

The area was developed in the 18th century with flax, snuff and papermills built on the water of Leith.

The 17th century Malleny House and Gardens owned by The National Trust of Scotland has the gardens open to the public and features four 100 year old Yew trees known as the four apostles and was home to Scotland's National Bonsai collection until 2000, now located at Binny Plants near Ecclesmachan.
