Places Churches and Cathedrals > St Giles' Cathedral

Royal Mile, Edinburgh

Tracing its roots more than one thousand years back from now as a modest parish church in 854, St Giles' itself was founded in the 1120s.  Following this, a much larger church was erected at the site and additional chapels added until in 1638 St Giles' was decreed a Cathedral.

Having experienced a fire in 1385 and refurbishments over the centuries, there are few traces remaining of the original church with around 50 altars having been built (and subsequently demolished) by mid 16th century.

Many of the stain glass panels and memorials (of which there are nearly two hundred) date  from the 19th and 20th centuries.
